Moxa is a stick of Artemisia, which burns when set on fire, reaching very high temperatures. The stick will be held for several minutes on specific points, at a safe distance to avoid burns. The poles are very handy and light. Although it is not widely spread or well known, Moxa therapy is very ancient, thought to date back 5,000 years. It is a therapy that uses heat, it acts on the points of the energy meridians of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The application occurs through the use of mugwort cigars. These are applied directly to the areas to be treated and worked on. Moxa can be effective in the case of joint pain, muscle contractures, digestive blockages, neck and shoulder contractures, and various types of inflammation. Artemisia vulgaris, also known by the name of "devil-repelling herb", is harvested at the summer solstice and from its leaves, dried and aged for at least 2 years before being used, a wool is obtained, called moxa wool , with which balls, cones or, by wrapping it in mulberry paper, cigars are formed. According to the ancient texts of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Mugwort has multiple properties; in fact it is:
- Antiseptic, slows down or avoids the development of microbes (the most common antiseptic is in fact heat);
- Antispasmodic, it acts on the muscles of the gastrointestinal system, relaxing it;
- Diaphoretic, increases sweating, which leads to the elimination of toxins;
- Expectorant, unblocks and removes mucus from the trachea and bronchi;
- Carminative, removes air accumulated in the stomach and intestines;
- Eupeptic, stimulates digestion and appetite.
This plant, which in the East is also offered on the table as a healthy food, can be used on the skin because, when burned, it reaches a temperature of around 600-800 degrees; Artemisia leaves release substances that penetrate the skin and spread throughout the body. The heat that radiates through the channels of the meridians and blood vessels restores the energy flow and re-establishes psycho-emotional balance.
